Rain can put a real downer on things especially when you're running and with the ever-present threat of the heavens opening up the importance of having a waterproof jacket you can rely on has never been greater! Here at The Sole Supplier, we recognise the significance of staying both dry and stylish so we've put together a list of 5 of the best waterproof running jackets to buy in 2021!
We've pulled together some of the best options on the market taking into consideration waterproofing, warmth, technology, and a variety of other factors to make sure you find the perfect jacket.
Arc'teryx Atom SL Hoody
Our pick for keeping you warm and dry on winter runs.
Born out of a climber's basement in British Columbia, Arc'teryx has been manufacturing jackets for over 30 years with the great outdoors in mind, and this Arc'teryx Atom SL Hoody is no exception! Made from superlight technology, this waterproof running jacket emphasises the use of packability and lightweight materials to deliver a quality style that isn't going to weigh you down.
One of the greatest features of this jacket is its Coreloft insulation, which offers an excellent balance of lightweight warmth. Whilst there may be warmer jackets, and there may be lighter jackets, the Atom SL brings an ideal balance of the two. As an outer layer, this makes the jacket perfect for anyone who loves outdoor exercise even in the colder winter months.
Additionally, the Tyono 20 outer balances airflow with wind resistance and to top it all off a DWR finish is applied for exceptional water-repellent properties.
An area this jacket does fall short is its breathability. If you are running in hotter temperatures or under direct sun the jacket will become very hot very quickly! That is why we recommend this jacket if you are going to be running in wet and cold conditions.
If you need a jacket that's going to keep up with you as temperatures turn cold, look no further!

Nike Windrunner Running Jacket
Perfect for when the weather can't make up its mind.
Since '79, Nike has continued to make some of the best athletic clothing on the market and they're showing no signs of slowing down any time soon! This Nike Windrunner Running Jacket was one of the first track silhouettes the brand produced and now it arrives with both an updated look and top-tier technology.
The updated material features stretch-woven fabrics to maximise comfort and flexibility and a water-repellent shell to keep you dry throughout your workout. With a signature back vent featured, the increased airflow will help keep you cool, calm and collected when your run starts to heat up.
This is an excellent jacket for the transitional months, it can be packed down and strapped around your body ready to be used mid-run whenever the weather starts to turn. There is an incredible amount of detail placed into the jacket, from reflective details to the elasticated adjustable hood. A lot of thought was put into the garment's functionality.
The one flaw of this jacket is that it does not offer much warmth. Although it is water-resistant, colder temperatures may prove to be an issue. However, what it lacks in insulation it makes up for in breathability! This is one of the most breathable jackets available meaning it can even be used to deal with summer showers.
This jacket is perfect for anyone looking to take their runs to the next level!

Waterproof vs Water-resistant?
When looking for a new running jacket, you may be confused by the differences between 'Waterproof' and 'Water-resistant'. The difference between the two usually comes from the material used.
A water-resistant material, such as nylon, can withstand water but will still let some through. In heavy downpour you may still get wet through your jacket.
If a material is waterproof it provides a complete barrier, meaning no matter what the weather throws at you it will keep you protected.
While looking for waterproof jackets you may also see 'DWR' used often. DWR stands for Durable Water Repellent. This is a coating added which adds another layer of protection from the rain.
What is Gore-Tex?
Another commonly seen phrase when looking for waterproof gear is 'Gore-Tex'. But what really is Gore-Tex?
Gore-Tex is essentially a membrane, it acts as a barrier which stops water from coming in whilst still providing an excellent level of breathability. It is an incredible fabric with a huge amount of technical and scientific thought put into it which also explains why Gore-Tex items such as jackets and hats generally have a steeper price tag.
