We’re not exaggerating one bit when we say that May 2019 was one of the hottest months for sneakers in forever. Not only did we see a bunch of brand new adidas Futurecraft 4D sneakers, we also saw the release of some ultra high heat Nike collaborations. With all that said, we’ve done the impossible task of rounding up the ten best drops of the month!
From general releases to some of the most exclusive kicks in the world, we’ve carefully handpicked May’s most desirable drops that you need in your sneaker rotation right now! If you missed out on any of these, make sure you follow @thesolerestocks on Twitter for the latest and greatest restocks!
We kicked off the month of May with the Y-3 Runner 4D II ‘White Bone’! Released on May 2nd, it marks the fourth 4D sneaker to come from the legendary Japanese designer, and it sold out pretty much in an instant. Crafted from an ultra clean white Primeknit, a complementary 4D midsole also features down below, which is a departure from the ‘Aero Green’ units that we’ve come to love. A flawless fusion of adidas’ technical innovation and Yohji Yamamoto’s unmistakable fashion aesthetic, what a way to start the month!
On May 4th, we were treated to the Air Jordan 4 ‘Bred’. Celebrating thirty years of the iconic AJ4 silhouette, this was a one-to-one take of the original version that dropped all the way back in 1989. Boasting a stealthy black base with ‘Cement Grey’ and ‘Fire Red’ accents, this release also featured the OG “NIKE AIR” heel tab branding that was missing in previous re-releases. To add to this, it arrived in the original box too! How is this still available to buy?!
Regarded by many sneakerheads as the hottest sneaker of 2019, the Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 ‘Cactus Jack’ finally released on May 11th after a ton of leaks and teasers. La Flame’s take on the iconic AJ1, it’s crafted from a range of premium materials and painted in a ‘Dark Mocha’ colour scheme with a striking black Swoosh that’s been flipped around. To add to this, Travis also added a hidden pocket at the ankle region to hold your secret stash – a feature that’s pretty rare when it comes to sneakers.
Literally one of the most unique AWM colourways in existence, the Cactus Plant Flea Market x Nike Air VaporMax 2019 was first teased during the Swoosh’s Air Max Day celebrations and officially dropped on May 16th to much acclaim. Made in partnership with Cynthia Lu, it works on a charcoal hued transparent upper with deconstructed elements throughout, such as the stitched on Swoosh and giant smiling face emoji around the heel. One of the hottest releases of May? Most definitely.
It was extremely hard to choose between the two colourways but we’ve selected the sacai x Nike LDV Waffle Daybreak ‘Green Gusto’ as the best of the bunch. After a slew of devastating delays, the Chitose Abe trainer finally hit shelves on May 16th. Taking hybrid shoes to a whole other level, it combined the classic Daybreak and Waffle Runner silhouettes into one, doubling up on everything from the tongues to the Swooshes. With more colourways set to drop soon, we’re beyond hyped!
Paying homage to the iconic Nike Air Raid of 1992, the Air Fear Of God Raid ‘Black Fossil’ released as part of Jerry Lorenzo’s second Swoosh collection. Utilising an ‘X’ shaped forefoot strap that’s taken straight from the aforementioned Air Raid, this shoe sits atop a contrasting white double-stacked midsole that is infused with Zoom Air technology for unbelievable comfort and unforgettable cushioning. If you didn’t manage to cop when they launched on May 17th, they’re actually still available!
Legend has it that the Yeezy Boost 350 V2 ‘Glow In Dark’ was created because Kanye West’s daughter, North, wanted a pair of Yeezys that glowed in the dark, and she finally got her wish when these dropped on May 22nd. Dipped in a vibrant green palette that’s hard to ignore, a transparent stripe shoots down the laterals so wearers can flex their socks with ease. Like the Yeezy Boost 750 ‘Light Grey’ of 2016, the midsole on this colourway glows in the dark, so you can flex even in low light conditions.
The colourway we’ve literally all been waiting for, the adidas ZX 4000 4D ‘Onix’ finally released on May 25th after months of leaks and teasers. Paying homage to the cold temperature spectrum of the Kelvin scale, it’s painted in an extremely unique palette that combines black with grey and red. Of course, as its name stated, a Futurecraft 4D midsole sits down below for extra comfort and endless cushioning. If you didn’t managed to cop a pair when these initially release, they’re still sitting over at adidas for some reason!
Arguably the most underrated collaboration of the month, the WANTO x adidas Yung-1 released on May 29th. Dressed from heel to toe in Gore-Tex, the Tokyo graffiti artist applied his own spin on the chunky silhouette, giving it an all-black makeup with striking yellow accents. For a more city-ready look, the shoe replaces the conventional lacing system with toggle laces, and a pull tab was also added for convenience. Considered by many as the best Yung-1 collab there is, grab a pair while they’re still available!
Like its LDV Waffle Daybreak counterpart, it was close to impossible to choose the best of the two colourways, but we’ve picked the sacai x Nike Blazer Mid ‘Varsity Maize’. A shoe that hit shelves on May 30th, it’s a mash-up of two classic Swoosh silhouettes with layered elements that create a unique texture across the entirety of the shoe. The highlight of the design is, without a doubt, the bi-colour Swooshes which stack on top of each other for a look that’s made to turn heads.
