Nike is set to continue its long-standing partnership with surf and streetwear brand Stüssy in the form of two new Stüssy x Nike Air Penny 2 colourways. After recently dropping a couple of takes on the fan-favourite Air Force 1, the duo’s latest collaboration will focus on Penny Hardaway’s 1996 model, allowing Stüssy to flex its creative pull outside of the Swoosh brand’s bestselling styles.
The Air Penny 2 was worn by Penny Hardaway during the ‘96-’97 NBA season and was the second of his signature models. At the time, it was one of Nike’s most technical basketball silhouettes, complete with an Air Max 2 unit in the heel and Zoom Air cushioning in the forefoot, as well as a carbon fiber midfoot shank that made it perfectly suited to the explosive sport. The tech didn’t stop there though, the upper was cradled by an evolution of the Penny 1’s “wings” support, with foam pieces wrapping themselves around the shoe’s leather base – a design detail that brought in both style and substance.
Although no imagery has surfaced yet, the Stüssy x Nike Air Penny 2 is rumoured to be dropping in two colourways: “Black/Cobalt Pulse”, and “White/Cobalt Pulse” which are likely to reference earlier colourways. Both iterations will arrive in a special-edition shoebox, making this a covetable collaboration for any sneaker collector. The pairs are rumoured for a late June release, so be sure to keep it locked for more updates as they come in.
In related news, Stone Island is set to team up with New Balance on two RC Elite colourways.
