As the countdown to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ begins, adidas delivers a cinematic masterclass that bridges the gap between the local cage and the global stage. The brand debuted Backyard Legends, a five minute film that serves as a powerful call to arms for football fans across the United Kingdom and beyond.
The project "celebrates the joy of free play and sets out to remind football fans around the world that every pitch, from backyards to the world’s biggest stage, can create a legend."
At the heart of this campaign lies the core message: "You Got This." adidas uses this narrative to inspire athletes to reclaim the pitch from the clutches of expectation. Academy Award nominated actor Timothée Chalamet leads the production, joining a roster of heavyweights including Lionel Messi, Bad Bunny, and Jude Bellingham.

Chalamet brings a genuine connection to the project, stating, “I used to dream of playing with these guys; you know, I was playing at Pier 40 as a kid, thinking about Beckham’s free kicks, Del Piero’s goals, and Zidane’s volleys – doing my own versions. I love this game, so it’s unbelievable to be doing this with adidas, captured with the best to ever do it.”
The film follows Chalamet as he attempts to build a squad capable of toppling a legendary local crew: Clive, Ruthie, and Isaak. These neighborhood icons represent the "win or go home" spirit that defines grassroots football. The story highlights how the backyard is where pressure disappears and legends begin.
Visually, the production leans heavily into 90s terrace culture, featuring analogue technology and era defining styles. Through CGI, they created a world where Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham exist alongside current stars like Lamine Yamal and Trinity Rodman.
In the official press release, Florian Alt, Vice President Global Brand Communications at adidas, explains the motivation behind the release: “Everyone remembers that feeling: playing for the joy of it, no pressure, no expectations. With Backyard Legends, we celebrate that freedom. It’s a reminder that self belief and playfulness are the real winning mindset.”
As the "Official Match Ball provider and kit supplier to 14 federations," adidas wants to ensure its presence is felt from the park to the stadium. You can watch the full Backyard Legends film on the adidas YouTube channel now.
