Steven Julien, the mastermind behind Apron Records, is no stranger to pushing boundaries. As the founder and an artist on the label, Julien has guided the electronic music powerhouse into various creative arenas over the years. His latest venture, however, may be the boldest yet: stepping into the world of footwear with the Apron Records x Nike Air Max 180 collaboration.
The first thing that stands out is the intriguing mix of materials. The design features shaggy fabric underlays and laces, reflective synthetics on the heel counter, scaly leather on the heel tab, and animal print leather on the Swoosh. While the choice of textures is undeniably eclectic, the colour palette ties it all together. A jet black sole unit and a pearlescent lateral Swoosh beautifully balance a dominant pine green.
The story behind the shoe adds extra depth. Julien, whose love for music partly began in his aunt’s salon, has honoured that origin with a razor blade tattoo on his hand; a symbol that also appears on the shoe. A straight razor adorns the front of the lace unit, and Julien has teased additional details, including a guide comb, in early promo shots.
While fashion may not be Apron Records’ primary focus, the label’s creative ventures have laid the groundwork for projects like this. Notably, their 2022 collaboration with Patta delivered a successful apparel collection, following their work soundtracking the Patta Air Max 90 release in 2021. These previous efforts may have paved the way for this exciting new partnership with Nike.
Details on the release date are still under wraps, but the Apron Records x Nike Air Max 180 is expected to drop soon. Keep following The Sole Supplier and smash that bell icon for your chance to snag these for retail when they drop.
