It's difficult to name a shoe that has travelled from the hardwood to the street quite like the adidas Superstar. The Superstar transcended its athletic roots, becoming a foundational piece of streetwear. It’s a shoe that's been on the feet of everyone from Run-DMC to skaters and artists, and it continues to be relevant today. With many trends coming and going, the Superstar has stayed relevant, and adidas is celebrating its lasting legacy with the 'Superstar: The Original Icon' campaign and a major cultural takeover in London.
The campaign unites a cast of remarkable individuals who represent different facets of creativity and culture. This roster of UK based originals feels authentic to the sneaker's history, bringing together music, acting, and sports.
We have Stormzy, the Croydon born grime and hip hop artist whose powerful lyrics and genuine persona have made him a household name in the UK. From his grassroots beginnings to headlining Glastonbury, Stormzy’s journey embodies the kind of authentic, self made success that the Superstar has always stood for.
Next is Olivia Dean, a singer/songwriter from London whose soulful voice and honest lyricism have captivated audiences. Known for her thoughtful and intimate performances, she represents a more reflective and personal side of music, proving that originality can also be soft and sincere.
Shygirl, an artist who works across multiple disciplines, challenges the conventions of electronic and experimental pop music. Her work is unapologetic and forward thinking, challenging conventions and creating a truly unique artistic identity. Her presence in the campaign speaks to the Superstar's embrace of boundary pushing creativity.
From Dublin, actor Barry Keoghan has a talent for portraying intricate and unsettling personalities, with notable roles in films like The Banshees of Inisherin and Saltburn. His performances are always compelling and memorable, showing that true originality comes from a commitment to pushing personal limits.
In football, two of the game's brightest young stars represent the athletic side of the Superstar’s history. Jude Bellingham, the young English midfielder, has a commanding presence on the pitch that has seen him rise to prominence at Real Madrid and on the international stage.
Alongside him is Florian Wirtz, the German attacking midfielder, whose exceptional technique and vision have made him a crucial player for both his club and country.
adidas is celebrating these original icons and the shoe itself with a three day cultural takeover at London's 180 Studios, called THIS IS SUPERSTAR.
The event will feature workshops, skate jams, and live performances, including a cypher hosted by JD and Rinse FM, which will culminate in a performance by grime veteran Ghetts. There will also be a block party on the final day, soundtracked by Confidence Man.
Chris Walsh, VP Brand at adidas, said in the press release, “Superstar has never just been about style - it’s about the people who make it their own." With its enhanced padding and classic colourways, the Superstar is back, and it's here to remind us that some originals are simply timeless.
