The New Balance 860v2 may not be the brand's latest innovation, but its resurgence in recent months is impossible to ignore.
After re-entering the market with a general release in mid 2023, the silhouette has seen collaborations with Up There, Comme des Garçons, and Aime Leon Dore. These frequent creative partners have expanded the model's aesthetic potential, breathing new life into its design.
New Balance’s creative team just laced up and delivered. Skipping the flashy, “look at me” colours that usually dominate tech runners, New Balance takes a more subtle route with the 860v2.
The aptly named “Ice Wine” colourway sets the tone with its frosty mesh base, complemented by a soft off-white hue along the shoe’s throat. While classic grey tones make an appearance, they adopt a cooler, more subdued look, enhancing the shoe's industrial aesthetic. This theme extends to the design's details, including the greyscale sole unit and the metallic toe cap.
On the other hand, the "Midnight" edition stands out with its dark grey mesh base, accented by layered shades of blue leather on the toe, quarter, and heel. Departing from the 860v2's usual mesh tongue featuring the standard New Balance text, the "Midnight" opts for a sleek grey leather tongue adorned with a bold “NB” logo, adding a fresh twist to the classic design.
Both of these colourways have started popping up on global NB sites, so a UK launch seems to be just around the corner.
