Happy Earth Day! An event that's celebrated around the world every year, April 22nd is a day dedicated to environmental protection. While it's quite hard to demonstrate any sort of support this year, especially with the current pandemic that's keeping everyone in their homes, we at The Sole Supplier have hand selected ten sustainable and eco-friendly sneakers that are sure to reduce your carbon footprint!
Encompassing a wide range of brands from Nike to VEJA, we've also included a ton of different silhouettes and price points too, so make sure you take a look at our top recommendations down below and stay well and safe!
To kick things off, we have the adidas Ultra Boost 20 "Core Black". Instead of the usual Primeknit construction that's been used on the UB since 2015, this makes use of the Three Stripes' brand new Primeblue technology instead, which is infused with recycled plastic waste found at beaches and coastal communities. This, paired with the Continental rubber found on the outsole, makes it one of the most environmentally friendly trainers that adidas sell right now.
Not only is the Nike Air Max 720 "Summit White" perfect for the sizzling hot summer months ahead, it's also insanely comfy for all-year-round wear due to the extra chunky 38mm Air midsole down below. In fact, this unit is made from over 70% recycled waste - a statistic that was widely touted back when 2018 when the AM720 made its official debut.
One of the newest brands on this list, the VEJA Campo "White" is making waves across the sneaker community, not only for its sleek, minimal design, but also for its sustainable punch. Featuring leather uppers, a recycled polyester lining, and natural rubber from the Amazonian forest, each pair is ethically made from start to finish. There's no wonder that the Parisian brand is leading the eco fashion world.
The Vans Old Skool "Black" is a staple amongst many sneaker rotations, but not many people know that it's pretty green as well. The Anaheim-based brand is part of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and plan on using 100% renewable energy in its own operations by 2025. They've also taken other measures too, including donating to charities working to fight the illegal wildlife trade.
You can't have a list dedicated to sustainable sneakers without mentioning the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Renew "White". Using discarded materials and plastic bottles to make up its canvas upper, the design is as classic as it gets. Better yet, this shoe is available in a bunch of different colourways and you can also buy it in full family sizes as well.
Made from upcycled ocean plastic trash collected from remote islands, beaches, and coastlines, the Parley x adidas Terrex Free Hiker "Dash Grey" is made in collaboration with Parley For The Oceans - an environmental organisation that addresses threats towards the oceans. While this certainly isn't their first project together, it's definitely one of their best right now.
Not many sneakerheads know this but the Flyknit used on the Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit 3 "Black" is actually partially made from recycled plastic. In fact, in 2018, the Swoosh was recognised by Textile Exchange as using the most recycled polyester in the industry, and from 2010 to 2018, they transformed 6.4 billion plastic water bottles into recycled footwear or apparel.
Made in collaboration with the avant-garde fashion designer, the Rick Owens x Veja Low Sock "Dust Black" made its debut last year and it made sneakerheads, fashionistas, and environmentalists extremely happy. Using the same sustainable and ethical techniques that the Paris-based brand is known for, it features a recycled polyester upper, a sugar cane midsole, and a plant based outsole. This is all topped off with wild rubber from the Amazonian forest.
A deconstructed take on the classic silhouette, the Vans Sk8-Hi Cap "White" is made by one of the most sustainable brands in the game. As mentioned before, Vans is part of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and are a huge advocate of fighting the illegal wildlife trade.
And last but by no means least we have the adidas ZX 2K 4D "Solar Yellow". The newest sneaker in this list, it's inspired by heat maps and sits above a full length Futurecraft 4D midsole. An innovative technology that was developed by the Three Stripes back in 2015, the advanced 3D printing technique results in a reduction of waste material and is being used on more and more of their sneakers.
