Rewind the tape back to 2015 and you would have seen the adidas Superstar (Shell toe) on every high street up and down the country. Whether it was a deep orange, light blue or even bright pink, the adidas Superstar would flash by you in almost any colour imaginable. This was thanks to adidas’ “Supercolour” Pack that released in collaboration with Pharrell Williams, serving up 50 monotone versions of the Superstar. Now over 8 years later, could a colour wheel release be on the horizon for the 3-Stripes? And more importantly, which will be the chosen silhouette?
The “Supercolour” editions were a huge success, with Pharrell’s hand-selected PANTONE colours selling out time after time. You might even remember the famous photo of Pharrell sitting in a circle of his 50 Superstar iterations, a photo that now deserves a spot within the hall of fame of sneaker history.
Since then, the only footwear project that has matched the scale of the “Supercolour” Pack would be the late Virgil Abloh’s Off-White x Nike Dunk “The 50’ from 2021. Along with the huge selection of choice within the pack arrives a set of heavy debates, which colour did you manage to pick up or which colourway was the best? Two simple questions that led to endless discussions between the most OG and novice of footwear fans back in 2015.
Although the most important question surrounding the rumoured return of the “Supercolour” Pack would be which lucky silhouette has been chosen? With adidas’ archival rotation stronger than ever, it’s a tough choice for anyone at the Herzogenaurach HQ to make. The most likely contenders are the Samba, Forum and Campus, with our money being on the latter.
Having said that, @arab_lincoln took to his Instagram to display a pair of monotone “Lilac” Humanrace x adidas Samba, giving us a strong suggestion that we should expect more from the 3-Stripes over the coming weeks. It’s also a hint that Pharrell is at the helm once again due to the Humanrace presence on the collaboration. However, with the global artist heading up the Creative Director role at Louis Vuitton as well as the release of his new Humanrace Skincare product line, we’ll be interested to see how Pharrell manages to balance another project within his already-packed schedule.
Either way, 50 different shades of an adidas silhouette could be exactly what the world of footwear needs. Just imagine all the heated debates you had with your friends over the Pharrell Superstars that you can now have as a fully grown adult. Are you here for another “Supercolour” pack? Which colourway would you cop first? Let us know over on our socials.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated with any more information as and when we receive it, so make sure to keep it locked to The Sole Supplier! While you’re here, why not check out the rumoured Union x Air Jordan 1 High OG…
