Unless you've been living under a rock the entirety of 2022 so far, you might have noticed cargo pants are back in, and arguably, bigger than ever. Originally designed in the 1930s for the British military to hold field dressing, maps and other important items, cargos have truly evolved past their functional upbringings now into one of fashion's most prolific trends.
While this isn't the first time cargo pants have become a fashion movement, things now differ quite significantly from the late '90s and early Y2K additions many of us saw growing up. Nowadays, cargo pants can be some of the most stylish legwear options available on the market, with numerous cuts, styles and forms replacing the classic oversized and baggy fits of the past - (not that there's anything wrong with those.)
The key to embracing cargo pants in 2022 is simply by finding your fit. Not all of us are quite yet ready to embrace the oversized and straight-cut movement we're seeing with parachute pants, painter pants and other additions, and that's okay. Instead, if you're looking to jump on the cargo pant hype, it's worth learning just a few of the options available.
Our first option is the classic utility-styled fit. Not too slim, not too baggy - instead, that middle ground that tends to appeal to the masses. Take these Jordan Essentials Men's Utility Trousers, for instance. They're made from durable twill, which is robust but also boasts a stiff and formed drape. This pair will work particularly well alongside high-top sneakers due to how they fall.
Our second look is for those who are willing to embrace the relaxed side of things. Made from durable ripstop, these Nike SB Kearny Skate Cargo Trousers are hard-wearing and will age nicely thanks to quality construction. With a baggy and straight-leg form, this kind of cargo tends to work better with bulkier sneaker silhouettes, like the Nike SB Dunk, for example.
Our final look is arguably the most accessible out of the bunch for those who prefer a slim-fit or tapered look. Whilst roomy at the top of the leg, the Nike Sportswear Club Fleece Men's Cargo Trouser features a slight taper towards the bottom, creating a slim-fitting profile. Due to the taper and cuff, these cargos tend to work better with narrower profile shoes, so bear that in mind before you take the plunge!
