Held annually in New York City, the Footwear News’ Achievement Awards (FNAA) honours the year’s best styles, designers and retailers and 2019’s nominees included some of the world’s biggest names alongside some unexpected picks.
The category that has everyone waiting on tenterhooks is the “Shoe of the Year” which counts the likes of Virgil Abloh and Kanye West as past winners. This year’s winner is, surprisingly, Dr Martens. Snapping up the prize for its iconic 1460 boot thanks to the style’s “authentic message of comfort, individuality and rebellion.” Dr Martens has a brand-new wave of consumers from a younger generation to thank for the wild success and resurgence of the classic mod boot.
Other brands that reaped the rewards at the ceremony were Tommy Hilfiger – for Collaborator of the Year – and VF corp was named Company of the Year.
Although the 1460 Doc Marten is an undeniable icon, we think there’s a few sneaker silhouette that missed their time to shine this year. Should the adidas Yeezy 700 have taken the crown? You decide!
