While 2022's collegiate revival might still be ongoing, it would seem a lot of brands are already looking to get ahead on the next trend. Over the last few months, there has been nothing short of a cluster of baseball-inspired or themed collections, with each sharing or making direct nods to the sport's biggest MLB teams.
Now, while it might be simple to draw obvious parallels between America's favourite pastime and many of the companies that call the States home, we still think it would be fair to say brands are looking to embrace the sport and its aesthetics more than ever before.
Given baseball's iconic sportswear style, it doesn't take a genius to work out why these brands are quick to embrace both the silhouettes and relevant motifs. The classic baseball jerseys, caps, tees, windbreakers, coach jackets, and even mirrored sunglasses all exude laid-back style, making them ideal for both hypebeast and fans of the sport alike.
With baseball sharing similar themes to the current collegiate and varsity trend, it's not farfetched to say that the baseball streetwear movement could be a direct evolution of the current sportswear bias. Sure, you could argue Yankees caps and similar items have always had their place in fashion, but there has been nothing short of an embrace for some of the sport's other teams and signatures in recent times.
With many brands looking to baseball for inspiration, we thought we would recount some of the most notable releases of recent times. So if you're looking for some sporting-style inspiration, this might just be one for you.
Introduced in 2018, Gucci x MLB first shocked audiences as it graced the catwalk for the Italian fashion house's Fall/Winter show. Fast forward to 2022, and this unforeseen link-up still had the fashion world on strings as it was finally made available via the Gucci Vault experimental space.
The collaboration itself featured a selection of classic baseball silhouettes reimagined with a high fashion approach to aesthetic, styling and materials. Large logos, bright colours and oversized fits were all running themes throughout, offering a revised and unique take on some of the classics.
Standout pieces from the collection include an oversized New York Yankees plush hooded jacket, a Los Angeles Angels varsity and even a selection of fuzzy baseball caps. With a maximalist approach truly on offer, MLB x Gucci managed to intertwine the unique worlds of high fashion and sporting heritage, making this one a collab for the ages.
Arriving earlier this month, skate heavyweights Thrasher and HUF joined forces to celebrate both skateboarding and baseball with this unique apparel collection. Both companies hail from the Bay Area of San Francisco, an area which is also home to the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics, two prominent teams in the MLB league.
The collaboration itself consisted of a range of classic apparel and accessories. Included, we saw vintage coach jackets, baseball jerseys, sweats, shorts, tees and caps, with each showcasing a range of varsity-styled texts, prints and graphics.
Thrasher's "Skate Goat" motif made a return across a variety of pieces also, complete with unique graphics on sweats and tees. These pieces were even backed up by a novelty bobblehead, a fan favourite accessory and collector's item popular among baseball fans around the globe.
Back in May of 2021, Major League Baseball and Ralph Lauren collided for what can only be described as a heavy hitter of a collaboration! Growing up in the Bronx, Ralph Lauren developed an indescribable adoration for baseball and even to this day follows the sport as a die-hard fan.
The collaboration itself celebrated four of baseball's biggest teams, with the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals all getting their fair share of unique styles.
Included within the lineup, we saw signature track jackets, caps, fleeces and polo shirts, all of which inherited classic Polo Ralph Lauren silhouettes. Atop these pieces, we saw a range of stylish team logos as well as a feature from Polo Ralph Lauren's famed bear motif, complete with a ball and catching mitt in hand.
Other notable pieces included a satin New York Yankees jacket that mimicked the piece worn by Ralph Lauren himself during his first pitch at the famed Yankee Stadium.
The latest to test the waters with the baseball trend is none other than luxury streetwear brand Off-White. This collaboration arrived earlier this month as a three-way link-up between Off-White x New Era x MLB and offered a fresh and distinctive approach to classic baseball styling.
This link-up specifically celebrated the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays and the Chicago Cubs, with hoodies, T-Shirts, basketball shirts, and classic New Era 59FIFTY fitted caps all on offer.
In true Off-White fashion, each piece featured some of the late and great Virgil Abloh's classic motifs. For instance, a "YOUR NAME 23" graphic graced the rear of each shirt, while the signature air quotes marking is seen next to each team's logo. In addition, the caps sport a unique construction, complete with circular cutouts missing from the brim and body.
Though London's own Palace Skateboards and the Detroit Tigers share no known similarities, this didn't stop the duo from collaborating for a stylish link-up back in February of 2022. This unified connection saw the pair merge the worlds of skateboarding and baseball for a winter-themed collection.
At the core of the capsule, we saw a classic varsity jacket, complete with co-branded signatures from both Palace and the Detroit Tigers. Throughout, the Tiger's signature "D" emblem is paired flawlessly with large tiger graphic prints and Palace's italic font. Accompanying this piece, hoodies, tees, joggers, caps and even a balaclava offered similar themes.
One brand that has always had baseball at its core is the New York fashion and lifestyle label Aimé Leon Dore. Since its 2014 inception, ALD has taken pieces from New York's rich sporting history and incorporated that into its own being. Whether it be basketball, baseball or football, ALD has successfully nitpicked its way through the best of the best when it comes to sportswear motifs and silhouettes.
Its latest SS22 offerings are no different, with classic baseball-inspired pieces such as jerseys, varsity jackets, caps and tees featured alongside a range of tasteful contemporary goods. Given the brand's natural knack for pairing these styles, Aimé Leon Dore has managed to create its own unique identity fueled by an array of preppy looks and stylish editorials.
It remains to be seen if the baseball trend will take off any more than it already has, but given the success and limelight some of these brands have already seen as a direct cause, it won't be long until more and more labels begin to embrace both the sport and its relevant aesthetics.
