Twenty years ago, a remarkable idea was born when 15 year old Connor Doherty, son of Nike executive Michael Doherty, envisioned a unique way to connect Nike’s creative teams with patients at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. At the time, Michael had recently joined the hospital’s board in 2002. Inspired by his son’s vision, he pitched the idea to his colleagues at Nike; and the rest, as they say, is history.
Since its inception, Nike’s annual Doernbecher Freestyle collections have raised over $40 million for the hospital, changing countless lives over the past two decades. As Nike gears up to release the 20th anniversary capsule on 25th January 2025, that incredible total is poised to grow even further. The celebratory collection includes a range of sneakers, from Air Max silhouettes to the Nike Pegasus 41. However, one of the standout pieces is the Air Jordan 6, designed by 15 year old Jillian Beagley.
Jillian’s story is nothing short of inspiring. Diagnosed with a severe liver disease as an infant, she underwent a life saving transplant at age 11. Her Air Jordan 6 design pays heartfelt tribute to her living donor, featuring the embroidered phrase “Give Life” on the toe box.
The AJ6 showcases alternating pink and teal underlays, inspired by Jillian’s mismatched Jordan sneakers, while crisp white leather overlays provide structure and balance. Heart shaped perforations add a playful touch, and a hook and loop fastener on the collar allows wearers to customise the shoe with patches reflecting Jillian’s favourite hobbies and interests.
Metallic gold accents elevate the design, appearing on the rear spoiler, lace lock, and glittery shroud, while the heel displays embroidered “Pure Gold” branding. Additional text on the medial midsole reads “Sports Are My Joy,” celebrating Jillian’s passions.
The details don’t stop there. A glittery gold tongue and “Gold” stitching under the Jumpman logo on the heel further reinforce the theme, emphasising the idea that everyone is “Pure Gold.” The thoughtful design elements make this sneaker a heartfelt tribute to Jillian’s journey and a symbol of hope and resilience.
Jillian’s Doernbecher Air Jordan 6 will be released on 25th January, in men’s sizing, with all proceeds benefiting Doernbecher Children’s Hospital through the OHSU Foundation.
