There’s no denying that football-style ‘fits have dominated fashion this summer, but over the past couple of years, the sport itself has evolved to be more fashion-conscious too. With more and more clubs turning to designer brands for their off-pitch formal looks, it seems a natural fit for Nike and Martine Rose to link up ahead of this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Designed to outfit elite athletes at the event, Martine Rose’s new collection with the Swoosh has been crafted with the idea of doing away with traditional gendered clothing. Instead, player suiting arrives with a gender-neutral cut which spans shirts, jackets, trousers and a trench coat.
Speaking on the collection in the show notes, Rose said: “When a woman wears a suit, it expresses strength, resilience and beauty,” comments Martine in the collection notes. “I want women to feel powerful in their suits as men do. Moreover, there’s no gender attached to the suit. Anyone can wear it. I hope one day we’re not talking about gender in sports; we’re just talking about the sport itself. When everything is stripped back, only the game remains.”
As well as formal suiting, the collection also includes several sporty-looking accessories, including socks and glasses. Fans of Rose’s Nike Shox mules will also be pleased to hear that the style will be dropping in three colourways alongside the rest of the capsule. The collection will release in full on Martine Rose’s website on the 25th of July, with a SNKRS release set to take place on the 27th.
