What is the price of the New Balance 204L and where can I buy it? The New Balance 204L “Mushroom” and “Timberwolf” editions will retail for £120.
What are the design features and inspirations behind the New Balance 204L? While the 204 sits perfectly within the New Balance library, sneakerheads are still itching to understand the model’s inspiration. While no single designer has laid claim to the shoe as of yet, we can assume the shoe came from the in-house design team at New Balance. Although there are indications that british footwear designer Charlotte Lee has had a hand in the creation of the shoe. If true, Lee's portfolio is becoming more impressive by the year and a name that could well go on to become the footwear designer of our generation.
People’s reactions are a great indicator of what may have inspired the shoe, with many drawing comparisons to Miu Miu’s collaboration on the NB 504 SL from 2024. Although the collaboration struck a chord with the fashion girlies, the huge price tag meant the majority didn’t get a chance to add them to their rotation. Now the 204L delivers on that same aesthetic, giving you the same slim profile and suede construction at a much more affordable price point.
The New Balance 204L draws from deep archive roots, echoing the NB 205—a 1976 marathon shoe later revived in the 2000s and popularised by elite Kenyan runners. This legacy continues in the 204L’s minimalist design, nodding to the 205 and the lesser known 203. While stripped of tech like ENCAP or ABZORB, it thrives as a lifestyle option with clear 70s and Y2K influences. Slim EVA midsoles reduce bulk, outdoor inspired eyestays add modern flair and panelling echoes the NB 530 and 503 SL. The result is a hybrid silhouette with all the makings of New Balance’s next standout.
How does the New Balance 204L fit, and is it true to size? While this New Balance does look on the slimmer side, a lot of feedback suggests that the shoe actually fits wide. You can expect more room than on other low profile trainers which sacrifice space in the toe area for a more streamline look. As is the case with a number of other New Balance offerings, we recommend going up half a size.
Are there collaborations or special editions for the New Balance 204L? Yes of course, as with any debut New Balance model, there are already a slew of great collaborations to look forward to. Taking a slightly different approach from the earth tones of the launch duo is global retailer KITH. Fieg opts for a “ Bluebell ”, “ Sunburst Orange ” and “ Camelia Pink ” to introduce strong colours into the 204’s library.
Another notable project just featured on the catwalk during AURALEE’s latest showing at Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2026, you can expect this duo to hit the shelves later in 2025. Just like AURALEE did with the NB 475 and 1906R, it has already proved how the NB 204L easily fits into the world of high fashion, this time via a minimalist Japanese design aesthetic.
We can’t forget to mention Basketcase’s very ‘New Balance’ take on the 204. A brand with a reputation for viral shoe moments, this time was no different with the BC adding a pony hair and a double set of laces. Unfortunately this was a friends & family exclusive, so get used to enjoying them from afar like us!
Lastly, we all know it will only be a matter of time before Joe Freshgoods and Salehe Bembury put their own spin on the NB 204, but until then we’ll gladly accept the “Mushroom” colourway!
New Balance 204L Timberwolf
Why is the New Balance 204L so Hyped? The hype behind this silhouette has been palpable. Fronting the launch campaign is Spanish superstar Rosalia, whose global influence and genre bending mix of flamenco and pop is putting the spotlight firmly on this new silhouette. Fans are already queuing up to wear what she’s wearing, especially with the 204L offering that sought after Miu Miu look without the steep price tag. Those with the Miu Miu x New Balance collab on their mood boards are eyeing the “Mushroom” colourway in particular, and with a second set of brown laces included for that layered double lace styling, it is already a must cop.
But it is not just about co signs or aesthetics as the 204L is primed for the moment. Its low profile design channels a blend of 70s running shapes and mesh-heavy Y2K favourites, with some even spotting a subtle football influence in the DNA. Whether you are trying to switch things up from the NB 530 or looking for a fresh alternative to the NB 327, this one is built for a new wave. Easy to wear, endlessly versatile and on trend without trying too hard, the New Balance 204L might just be your next go to.
