Picture this: It's 1999, and Nike has just unveiled the Air Max Tailwind 4. One of the first sneakers to feature Air bubbles at the forefoot, it was a marvel in footwear design. In fact, it was so popular in Australia that it was dubbed "the most stolen shoe in Australian shoplifting history,"; earning it the nickname “Jailwinds.” Fast forward twenty years and the chunky silhouette is still as hyped as ever, so to celebrate this massive milestone, the Beaverton-brand has unveiled a special colourway that pays homage to Tokyo.
Looking to the Japanese capital for inspiration, the leather, mesh, and suede upper of the 'Tokyo' is influenced by the striking and vibrant colours of Shibuya's Harajuku district. Light violet tones reach the outer overlay, while neon pink hues arrive on the piping. Icy blues also make an appearance as a nod to the country's beloved GariGari-Kun popsicles.
In terms of branding, an era-specific "MAX AIR"; is embroidered onto the tongue, while a multicoloured "TYO"; logo hits the heel, standing for Tokyo. To round it all off, the famed Air midsole sits down below for comfort that's been unrivalled for two decades, and this is lined with rubber for unbeatable traction with every step.
At this moment in time, we're not entirely sure if the Nike Air Max Tailwind 4 'Tokyo' will hit Europe, but if it does, expect it to release on October 3rd at Nike and select stockists.
