Word is out that Nike is retro-ing its Fantastic Four pack, bringing back two cult classic Air Max to the shelves in 2027. Both the Air Max 95 “Human Torch” and Air Max 90 “Mr Fantastic” first dropped back in 2006, but you can bet that this re-release is not just meant for the OG sneakerheads, you can bet that the OG sneakerheads won’t be the only ones interested in this release.

The Fantastic Four franchise is no stranger to footwear collaborations either, having worked with the likes of Crocs, PUMA and BAPE since the unofficial Nike collection dropped back in ‘06. For those of you who dabble in the video game world, you might remember seeing the Fantastic Four inspired Nike pairs drop on Fortnite in 2025, although interestingly enough the Dr. Doom Foamposite was nowhere to be found.
What will be interesting to see is if Nike drops GS and Toddler sizes of the pack, paying service to those who created their first memories of the shoes in-game. Can that digital-first memory lead to a sneaker purchase? I know Nike is trying to figure that out.
We did get a retro version of the Invisible Women 2.0 last year, but reception was lukewarm as the iconic translucent panelling was heavily reduced. Older sneakerheads will know how the original Invisible Women Air Force 1 was prone to yellowing and cracking, an example of the silhouette where it aged less-than-gracefully.
As for the “Human Torch” 110, most pairs are now plagued by cloudy Air units, and if they’re still somehow deadstock, getting them out the box would likely result in them crumbling away in your hands.

For those who are up-to-date with the Comicon scene, or if you’re a fervent checker of IMDB, it appears that the Fantastic Four will be making an appearance in the next Avengers Doomsday (2026) and Avengers Secret Wars (2027) films. With Robert Downey Junior playing the villainous Doomsday, plus the simple fact that the Avengers’ movies are absolute cultural powerhouses, dropping the 3 Nike Marvel-inspired shoes alongside the franchise makes total sense.
Included in the retros are the Dr Droom’s Foamposite Pro, a predominantly black and white that is arguably the most basic from the pack. One personal theory involves a possible retro of the MF Doom Dunk that really blew up during the early 2020s Dunk hype era, although with the passing of the late Daniel Dumile (MF Doom) in 2021, getting the go-ahead from his estate is unlikely. Will Nike create an inspired-version of the shoe? Who’s to say, but with the Dr Doom character being part of the zeitgeist in the upcoming year, it could be a great opportunity to pay homage to an underground icon.

Whether the Nike Air Max 95 “Human Torch” does manage to successfully launch, it’s quite obvious that the loud red colourway and leather panelling will make this a no-go for the serious 110 fans in Liverpool.
Just take a look at how the Olympic 110s performed recently, sadly a number of these retro favourites don’t translate as well today. Seeing this comic book-inspired favourite return is overall a positive from the Swoosh, but I feel that the Air Max 90 “Mr Fantastic” is likely to perform better in this case.
