Parachute Pants: What's The Hype About?

Parachute pants, or flight pants, named after both the baggy style and the material from which they are made, have taken over social media, with it-girls and other influencers of all genders jumping on the trend and living their best '90s lives. According to the trends and category manager at Depop, searches for parachute pants rose 3000% from April to June, thanks to the likes of Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber, but what what makes them so special?

Design-wise, the wide-leg trousers are cuffed at the bottom and come with an elasticated waistband that sits nicely on the hips (or alternatively on the waist for women, but this doesn't necessarily lend itself to the '00s look) and is often styled with crop top. Baby tees and racerback vests are preferably for a peak Y2K look, but this doesn't mean you're limited in wardrobe options. Parachute pants also suit the gorpcore trend nicely, thanks to their "waterproof" appearance and oversized cut.

Now with over 83.4 million searches on TikTok, parachute pants are in high demand. The casual trousers, that suit both rain and shine, don a puffed-up, technical appearance, that can also look either military-inspired thanks to lots of extra pockets, or off-duty and athleisure - the latter probably more what you're used to seeing on Instagram. Both guys and girls alike are loving them: girls might opt for a cropped, streamlined look on top, whilst guys pair theirs with baggy t-shirts. Trust us when we say you need a pair of Sambas to go with them though if you're to have the hottest street-style look for 2022. The Wales Bonner "Cream Green" collaboration is our favourite pair about right now, but we're not fussy!
