The cultural reach of Wicked remains extraordinary. The musical continues its run as a theatrical titan; Broadway has hosted more than 8,500 shows, drawing over 15 million theatregoers in New York City alone.
Now, the story’s fame is cemented in cinema, too: the recent film version, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, broke records, becoming the most successful musical film adaptation to date. As Wicked: For Good prepares to land in cinemas on 21st November, PUMA seizes the opportunity, bringing the world of Oz to their most iconic silhouette.
The focus of the new collection is around the widely adored low profile trainer, the Speedcat. This collaboration will prove essential for the legions of dedicated Wicked followers who eagerly await the sequel’s arrival.
The entire collection is built around the two central characters, Glinda and Elphaba. Glinda’s version asserts her delicate nature, featuring a gentle pink and lilac colourway. The design incorporates frills and stitching reminiscent of her signature costume. The mystical bubble she travels in appears as stitched artwork on the outer side of the shoe, complemented by a sparkling Formstrip. This shoe truly captures the character’s high flying glamour.
Elphaba's offering presents a strong contrast to her counterpoint. Black, ruched fabric covers the tongue and the front section of the shoe, giving the trainer a distinctly striking texture. Green metallic stitching subtly references her signature emerald skin tone, keeping the design tied closely to her identity. Both trainers carry the official Wicked branding on the tongue tab, unifying the set.
Adding a final footnote to the collection, PUMA introduces a Wicked Speedcat Ballet. This silhouette specifically draws inspiration from the original silver slippers worn in The Wizard of Oz; a detail often forgotten since filmmakers changed the colour to red for the screen. PUMA will make the Glinda and Elphaba trainers available in women’s, junior, and infant sizes, while the Speedcat Ballet launches in women’s and junior sizes. Fans can secure the entire footwear range, plus a selection of accompanying T shirts, directly from PUMA starting 5th November. For your best chance at snagging these for retail, make sure you smash that bell icon.
