New Balance’s evolution in recent years has been striking. It’s hard to believe that as recently as 2023, the “Protection Pack” was one of the brand’s most beloved offerings. Since then, the brand has leaned heavily into Y2K inspired aesthetics, shifting focus to models like the New Balance 1906R and New Balance 9060. This move makes the “Protection Pack” feel like a product of a different era, though it still holds a special place in the hearts of many New Balance enthusiasts.
For those fans, English retailer and frequent New Balance collaborator size? is keeping the “Protection Pack” alive with a fresh take. The upcoming collection introduces three new colourways of the New Balance 2002R, staying true to the line’s signature distressed aesthetic and extended suede overlay panels. Two of the pairs stick to earthy tones; one in rich brown and another in a stealthy black and grey combination; maintaining the familiar, understated look of the original series.
However, the standout of the pack is undoubtedly the metallic silver iteration. This version replaces the usual suede overlays with leather, offering a bold “Space Age” twist on the “Protection Pack” concept. It feels like a bridge between the turn of the decade design ethos and New Balance’s modern day direction.
A unifying touch across all three pairs is the pale yellow detailing, which accents the heel branding, lace options, and subtly peeks through at the heel counter for added depth.
These teaser images mark the first reveal of the size? x New Balance 2002R “Protection Pack,” and while details are still sparse, the collection is expected to launch on 13th March.
