If adidas Spezial is about celebrating legacy, then the 2025 SPZL F.C. collection might be its most passionate tribute to football culture yet. Following the success of last year’s Samba editions, including drops for Celtic, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa, adidas returns with bespoke Roelee SPZL silhouettes that nod to each club’s heritage and long-existing fan base.
Crafted alongside adidas Football in Germany and signed off by each club, these trainers go beyond simple colour swaps. They are visual stories for the terraces, stitched with nostalgia and club identity.
This latest drop follows the success of last year’s SPZL releases for Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, and Aberdeen, three collections that reignited fan nostalgia and saw queues stretching well beyond club shop doors
For Newcastle, it had to be black and white but not without class. A subtle light blue tongue branding nods to the city’s ‘70s badge era, while white contrast stitching across the upper brings unexpected texture, echoing the offbeat swagger of Asprilla’s mid-90s magic. The translucent foxing and repeat Mod Trefoil tongue emboss offer modern twists, while gold foil “NEWCASTLE SPZL” lettering under the collar gives it that St James’ Park polish. Releasing 16 October at the club store, the Gallowgate faithful will want to be quick.
The Villa edition taps into that unmistakable claret and blue, built in premium suede and accented by sky leather. The ecotex tongue draws on the look of vintage adidas Rhodes, but the shift to yellow branding is a nod to the bold kit hues of the mid-80s era, think Paul Birch and a young Platt coming through. Flocked stripes, gum foxing, and gold “ASTON VILLA SPZL” hits complete the package. Available 16 October at Villa Park, where European dreams still echo.
This might be the most conceptually layered of the trio. Celtic’s edition explores the multiple shades of green seen across their long visual history, from Lisbon Lion bottle greens to the bolder tones of the 1986 centenary strip. A dimpled white ecotex tongue cuts through the rich upper, while dark green translucent foxing adds depth. Gold “CELTIC F.C. SPZL” lettering and extra footbeds finish it off. Dropping 17 October, exclusively at the Celtic Superstore, just don’t expect these to last longer than a Lubo Moravcik free kick.
This latest SPZL release proves that adidas is not just honouring clubs, it is documenting culture. Following last year’s Samba series, the Roelee-based rollout digs even deeper, connecting with supporters who remember Bovril on cold nights, dodgy away ends, and cult heroes in forgotten kits. Spezial gets it. It always has.
If the past two years have been any indication for what's to come, which football clubs would you like to see the SPZL team honour with a pair of 3-Stripes?
While adidas and the SPZL team first implied that this would be a club store-only release, the trio will actually be dropping via the adidas CONFIRMED app on the 17th of Ocober 2025 at 9AM for a retail of £110.
