New Balance continues to push the boundaries of its most popular silhouettes. If you haven’t yet encountered the divisive 1906 loafer, you’re in the minority. Meanwhile, the Boston based brand has been quietly rolling out another bold reinterpretation you may not have heard of.
First introduced in April 2024, the New Balance 8040 is a sandal inspired take on the trending New Balance 9060 lifestyle shoe. While only a few colourways have been released so far, the 8040 hasn’t yet matched the hype (or the retail scarcity) of the 1906L, with most versions still available at discounted prices.
The New Balance 8040 retains the 9060’s signature stability focused sole, but its upper design sets it apart. Constructed primarily from premium pigskin suede, the shoe includes a synthetic toe guard for added durability. The latest “Great Plains” colourway sticks to a monochromatic theme, joining last year’s dark brown and navy versions.
The 8040 may not appeal to everyone but for fans of its unique style, the “Great Plains” colourway is set to launch in Spring/Summer 2025 with a £120 price tag.
