From a sneakerhead's eyes, Boston footwear label New Balance is at the forefront of the streetwear scene as of late, however, the brand also has both feet on the hardwood court – notably with two-time NBA champion Kawhi Leonard and his signature basketball shoes. Following the release of the New Balance KAWHI "Snowman" in December 2020, the Clippers shooting guard officially unveiled the silhouette's new form, dubbed the New Balance KAWHI "New Money", against his team's recent playoff Utah Jazz.
A closer look at the official images shows the setup taking cues from the $100 bill – seen through the usage of light blue hues from heel to toe and shades of copper across distinct features, specifically the "$100" imprint on the tongue, Kawhi's hair braid-inspired embroidery across the quarters, and NB insignia on the heel. At first glance, this might be a completely new look to basketball fanatics but seasoned sneaker veterans know that a similar style already appeared on the New Balance OMN1S "Money Stacks" colourway in 2019.
The uppers call in synthetic toolings, and of course, you can't talk about the New Balance KAWHI without meaning the FuelCell midsole underfoot that provides the ultimate energy return and support needed on and off the court, as well as the player's signature jersey number in the form of a lace dubrae forefoot.
