The Nike Chinese New Year 2020 "Year of the Rat" collection has been drip fed to fans by the sportswear giant over the last few months – so most of us thought we knew what to expect. But now, Nike has unveiled the entire pack and it’s more decadent, meticulously decorated and celebrational than we could have ever imagined.
Designed to celebrate CNY, this year marks a brand new cycle in the Chinese calendar and each pair of sneakers in this collection pays homage to the past four periods of the year of the rat, 1972, 1984, 1996 and 2008, which just so happens to line up with key moments in Nike's history.
There are eight pairs of sneakers in the Nike “CNY” pack. Designed to bridge the gap between functionality and fashion, this range officially has something for every style inclination. Extra special editions of the Nike Kyrie 6, Air Jordan 34 and Jordan 13 are delivered for basketball fans – Kyrie comes in bright yellow with a semi-transparent strap, while the Jordan 34 and AJ13 are both subtly decorated with stamps of China’s most ancient coins.
Next in the pack is the Nike Air Max 1; crafted to make a statement, this sneaker clashes bold prints with dragon scales, bright florals and Chinese symbols. The Nike Air Force 1 keeps things more pared-back with debossed dragons and other shapes, but a pop of colour can be found on the lining of the shoe, because, well… it’s a celebration after all!
Finally, the Nike Air Max 90 and Nike Air Max 720 come streamlined and simple. Opting for wearable colourways with flashes of gold and red in places, these two pairs are arguably the easiest to style in the whole collection.
There’s no news yet on when exactly the styles will be available, but rumour has it that the Nike x Chinese New Year 2020 “Year of the Rat” will be available to cop this Spring.
