The Salehe Bembury x New Balance 1500 is the plot twist we didn’t see coming. It’s the designer’s first crack at this iconic silhouette, and unlike his usual loud, "look at me" collabs, this pair opts for a look that whispers, “less is more.”
Since bursting onto the scene eight years ago, Salehe Bembury has built a reputation for creating eye catching, statement making footwear. His Crocs collabs, especially the Pollex Clog, took the brand from garden shoes to streetwear gold, with fans shelling out resale prices like it’s a limited edition sneaker drop.
And his work with New Balance? Equally genius! Just look at the 990v2 and 2002R kicks. But with the 1500, Bembury takes a refreshing step back, focusing on minimalism without losing his signature touch.
The 1500 ‘Olive Grey’ feels like a return to basics, in the best way possible. Its light grey mesh base is complemented by overlays of rich olive pigskin suede and soft leather accents around the collar. A beige midsole featuring New Balance’s signature ENCAP technology ensures comfort and bounce underfoot. At first glance, it might pass as a classic, timeless New Balance colourway, reminiscent of the original ‘Grey’ pairs from the 1980s.
Bembury’s unique DNA is still visible in bits. Pops of bright yellow on the tongue, hints of purple and orange near the front, and blue and green tones on the outsole add subtle yet playful touches. True to form, the sneakers come in a signature Bembury shoebox, complete with special graphics and extra laces; details that loyal fans will appreciate.
Does this signal a shift toward quieter, more understated sneakers? Perhaps. If someone like Bembury, known for his bold designs, is embracing simplicity, it’s a clear sign that low key styles are gaining traction.
And here’s the cherry on top: the Salehe Bembury x New Balance 1500 ‘Olive Grey’ is proudly made in the UK. Priced at £180, it’s set to drop later this month via New Balance and select global retailers.
