Two of your favourite things combined, food and footwear! If you thought the two were mutually exclusive then you'd be wrong. Just take the following 10 sneakers which take on a food-inspired theme in the most outrageous way. The question is, are these merely novelty or do you class them worthy of grail status? That's for you to decide but one thing is for sure, there's some tasty trainers out there.
Let’s face it, bacon should be its own food group so don’t be surprised that Nike paid homage to this tastiest of meats back in 2004. It actually launched at the hands of renowned sneaker boutique, Dave’s Quality Meats. This NYC retailer brought a theme not dissimilar to their shop interior. Streaky layers of suede and leather feature against crispy sections of dark brown. Not surprisingly, this mouth-watering colourway remains a commodity on the resell market.
It’s hard to know what is more impressive with this collaboration; the lobster inspired colourway or the accompanying packaging and extras. Releasing at the hands of Boston based retailer Concepts, the New England love for crustaceans provides a fitting tribute to the SB Dunk. For the first 50 pairs, these arrived in a lobster crate wooden box. Other extras included lobster claw rubber bands, fork, bib and wet naps adorned with the branding “Concepts Fishing Co’”.
Food-themed sneakers are clearly nothing new but how about this high-top that gets you delicious pizza at the flick of a switch?! Wearers of the Pie Top, a release limited to just 64 pairs, got instant access to Pizza Hut from any location, at any time – imagine that! A button placed in the tongue and connected via an app not only made these one of the best sneakers to feature embedded tech but as far as we’re aware, the only pair that can materialise food!
Sweet and savoury vibes feature to this mouth-watering colorway from back in 2016. What made it so unique was the waffle-effect uppers not to mention an oozing Swoosh and that sticky gum outsole. One last nod to this legendary dish came in the form of graphic branded insoles.
There’s been plenty of sneakers to get inspired by ice cream but none nearly as unique as this collaboration. Almost breaking the internet when it first got unveiled, the Ben & Jerry’s SB Dunk will now be remembered amongst 2020’s most sought-after releases. Can you be surprised? This is a perfect example of themed sneakers done right. Rather than shying away from the task, Nike went all in, covering every square inch of the SB Dunk with a homage to Ben & Jerry’s. It even features a melting Swoosh not to mention psychedelic inner lining and cow hide affect pony fur.
Sink your teeth into this juicy Saucony, a colourway that gained plenty of attention thanks to its theme which pays homage to everyone’s favourite fast-food. A tasty combo of colours depict everything from the sesame bun of a burger to the lettuce, beef patty and ketchup. This collectors item was made that little bit more special with the shoes wrapped in checkered packaging. Other nice touches included an order receipt and co-branded ketchup.
Another foody collaboration from END, this time a spicy rendition as they partnered with ASICS for this ultra-premium Gel-Lyte III. Those wasabi green uppers are complimented with subtle hits of pink as a nod to pickled ginger. These finer details were just as well thought out as the packaging and shoebox extras which included a pair of chopsticks and dipping bowl.
Everyone can appreciate street eats, those vendors that serve up a treat on your lunch hour or when you need it most – right after a heavy night! Celebrating the many options found in New York City, this meaty pair doesn’t skimp on saucy uppers. A variety of colours and materials celebrate the diversity of the many delicacies to be found across the city.
Not technically a food-inspired sneaker here but how could we not include this thirst-quenching Converse?! One of many collaborations from KITH founder Ronnie Fieg, this collection looks more like a one-of-a-kind custom. The world’s most recognisable logo, Coca Cola, gets printed in embroidered stitch across the heel. Unfortunately, these were just as limited as they are unique.
Kentucky Fried Crocs are a thing – and you thought 2020 couldn’t get any more bizarre! Arriving in a finger-licking print, these Crocs also sit on a bucket-inspired midsole. But wait, it gets even better as each pair comes with two Jibbitz™ charms, essentially drumsticks made to resemble and smell like chicken. C’mon, these are surely one to put on your bucket list?
