Dr. Martens has a celebrated history when it comes to spotlighting British subcultures, but it's not just the brand’s famous boots that are capable of making a statement. For its latest release, the UK-native imprint has selected its shoe of the summer, the Jorge Mule, to help it pay tribute to the dance scenes of the ‘80s and ‘90s, creating a pair that dons a familiar ‘Smiley®’ motif on the toebox.
Known to celebrate positivity and optimism, the ‘Smiley®’ motif became something of a mascot during the era, the undeniably happy face reflecting a genre founded on acceptance and uninhibited joy. Originally designed in 1971 by French journalist Franklin Loufrani, the image was created to help combat what he saw as a constant stream of negative news, and mark out more positive stories to his readers. Here made from fluffy boucle fabric, it sits atop the fan-fave Jorge, which has been reworked with a hairy suede for a casually distressed vibe.
Finished with another Smiley® logo underfoot, as well as DM’s signature branded buckles and yellow-stitched soles, this pair is sure to inject some happiness as we head into greyer days. And, what’s even better is that they’re super easy to clean, too - just wipe with a damp cloth and brush the suede when needed and you’re good to go.
