New Balance has been absolutely smashing it for various reasons over the past 12 months, but for a brand that’s known for its retro silhouettes and an incredible archive of styles, we have to admit that some of its 2022 models have been some of our favourite sneakers to come out this year. Helping to elevate the company from its ‘Dad Shoe’ reputation to an absolute must-have lifestyle brand, the New Balance designers have been working hard to formulate new silhouettes that are sure to become instant classics. Here are the ones that caught our eye.
There’s no better way to sum up New Balance’s blend of the past and the future than the New Balance 9060, a hybrid model that takes elements from the classic 99X line and fuses them with tech from the 860 V2. The result is a super stylish runner-style sneaker that combines supple suede with more practical mesh, and a statement sole unit that’s infused with ABZORB cushioning and SBS and ENCAP tech.
Okay, we’re cheating slightly for our second silhouette, as the high-top 650R calls back to a basketball shoe designed by a fresh-faced Steven Smith in the 80’s. That being said, while the 550 enjoyed a busy 2021, it wasn’t until a year later that NB decided to bring back its taller counterpart. Once again, the Boston-based brand tested the water with an Aimé Leon Dore collaboration before releasing a general-release version in the latter months, and we still maintain that they’re some of the freshest high-tops going.
The CT302 is another sneaker that took the scene by storm this year, but for a slightly different reason. This minimalist masterpiece has become one of the brand’s most popular silhouettes despite departing from its usual style, instead taking on a much sleeker, more court-style look. A stacked sole unit in a cupped style adds extra detailing to the bottom of the shoe, while the uppers get decked out in creamy-hued textile and suede for a super-clean look.
