For the millennials and older Gen-Zers, the Vans Authentic holds a very specific space in our hearts. During the time of MySpace and later on early Facebook and Tumblr eras of the late 2000s and early 2010s, this cult shoe reigned supreme. And this campaign shows just that: shot by photographer Rosie Marks, it taps into the 2010s music icons that the kids had on their MySpace boards, as well as paying homage to the Authentic’s skater roots with skateboarders Lizzie Armanto and T-Funk joining the music lineup in the campaign.
Rooted in Californian skate and surf subcultures, the Vans Authentic was first introduced in 1966 as a deck shoe with a sturdy, twice-as-thick sole compared to competing brands. Its solid and hard-wearing silhouette was swiftly claimed by the skateboarders, so much so that the shoe is still synonymous with skateboarding today.
The new drops featured in the campaign bring the classic checkerboard, colour-blocked styles and fun prints, mirroring the personal aesthetics of the icon wearing them.
The Vans Authentic Pack drops March 12 on vans.com and select retailers, and there’s more colourways to come in April.
