Brian Donnelly, the artist known professionally as KAWS, understands the enduring power of a cultural icon. His latest venture, a reunion with AllRightsReserved to transform Sesame Street’s beloved cast into vinyl figures, proves this once again. This merchandising opportunity is an act of artistic interrogation, forcing us to look at childhood touchstones through a distinctly adult lens.
The new collection extends the artist's iconic visual universe, following a successful initial partnership back in 2018. The worlds of high art and childhood nostalgia collide once more, as KAWS and AllRightsReserved continue the fruitful collaboration.
There are five figures: Elmo, Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, and Oscar the Grouch, arriving with KAWS's unmistakable X-eyes motif. This signature transforms the cheerful television characters into something altogether more contemplative. Where Sesame Street offered straightforward lessons in kindness, KAWS injects melancholy and a palpable sense of vulnerability. These pieces function as much as objects of reflection as they do coveted collectables.
KAWS and AllRightsReserved, the Hong Kong based studio responsible for bringing many of his monumental installations to life, have an established pedigree in merging high art with mass media. This new collection reaffirms that legacy, bridging the distance between the innocence of our earliest memories and the complex reality of contemporary art. It takes the familiar warmth of these TV icons and renders them in a visual language that speaks of both sadness and serenity.
The figures themselves are very detailed, crafted from premium vinyl. They adopt poses familiar from KAWS’s larger sculptures, echoing his recurring themes of friendship and childhood wonder. The meticulous application of colour; from Elmo's distinctive red, Oscar's gritty green; respects the original source material while carrying the artist's unmistakable creative stamp. We can’t help but agree that this attention to craftsmanship justifies the price tags, which position these items firmly within the designer toy market's top tier.
Talking of pricing structure, collectors have several options for securing a piece. The complete five character set commands a price of $10,190 HKD (approximately £1,000). For smaller groupings, a trio featuring Bert, Ernie, and Oscar will retail for $5,335 HKD (about £525), while the pairing of Elmo with Big Bird is priced at $4,855 HKD (roughly £485). A two piece set of Bert and Ernie comes in at $2,980 HKD (around £300), and individual figures of Elmo or Oscar are available for $2,355 HKD (approximately £245) each.
Collectors worldwide must mark their calendars. Global pre orders start on 16th October through the DDT Store online platform. Given the hype that surrounds any KAWS release, these limited edition figures will disappear quickly.
Sesame Street shaped millions of childhoods across the globe. By filtering those characters through his own unique artistic perspective, KAWS invites us to reconsider the emotional weight these figures carry. The X-eyes, initially a subversive, playful mark, now stand for nostalgia and reinterpretation, prompting viewers to examine their own memories through a contemporary framework.
