There's no doubt in anyone's mind that Zion Williamson is the future of professional basketball. At just 20 years old, the power forward has already been described as a "once-in-a-generation type athlete" by Kevin Durant, while an anonymous coach has labeled his speed and leaping ability as a "freak of nature". It should come as no surprise then that Jordan Brand have developed his first signature shoe, aptly dubbed the Zion 1.
Taking design cues from Williamson's personal life and professional career, the Zion silhouette is heavily inspired by costumers worn by superheroes. With a versatile construction, a high-top design, and a massive "Z" that shoots across the lateral and medial side panels, the aesthetic feels familiar yet different at the same time.
"We knew that one of Zion’s main inspirations for the look of the shoe was superhero armour. But when we thought about an icon or symbol that could clearly draw out the shoe’s benefits, the "Z" made perfect sense to us." explained Vianney de Montgolfier, Senior Footwear Designer at Jordan Sport. "It’s the letter for speed, it has the base for power, and it’s maybe the most distinguishable letter in the alphabet. There’s nothing else like it."
Making its grand debut in four colourways including the "Gen Zion", the "ZNA", the "Noah", and the "Marion", these will be accompanied by a full apparel collection that's decked out in anime bicep illustrations which allude to Williamson’s youthfulness and his out-of-this-world strength.
If you're a fan of the Nike Jordan Brand Zion 1 it makes its grand debut today over at Nike UK! Let us know which colourway you're feeling the most, and while you're here, you might as well take an on-foot look at the Travis Scott x Air Jordan 6 "British Khaki"!
