Japanese clothing label Needles links up with fellow Japanese brand ASICS for a two-pack collaboration featuring the old-school-inspired ASICS EX-89 silhouette. Formed in 1997, Needles infuses American’s workwear fashion sense with traditional Japanese design elements to blend Eastern and Western cultures. This Needles x ASICS EX-89 “Black” gets enveloped in an all-black upper, highlighted by purple outlines and co-branded labels.
The ASICS EX-89 debuted in late 2022 with several NBA-inspired colourways to honour the silhouette’s late ‘80s design aesthetic. A modern-day update to the archival GEL Extreme, this shoe displays a more lifestyle-focused demeanour. The two-pack collection flaunts a “White” and “Black” colourway, serving up contrasting light and dark details on the uppers. This rendition boasts an all-black leather construction with dark purple accents encompassing the ASICS stripes outlines, lace holes, and lining. Multiple stitching patterns bolster the toe and the sides, adding a subtle aesthetic to highlight the dark-based construction. Co-branded ASICS and Needles labels adorn the tongue, while the latter’s signature embroidered butterfly insignia decorates the heel panel. Greyscale accents make up the midsole, with lighter grey shades on the rear portion of the outsole, complementing the black forefoot section.
