Nike Zoom Vomero 5 Timeless Dunk

Nike tries out an old trusty recipe with a contemporary twist for its Zoom Vomero 5 Timeless Dunk. It’s never odd to see the Swoosh create hybrid iterations, whether it’s the Air Max Plus 97 that merged two icons together or even the Jordan Fusion series from the early 2000s, which put the classic Air Jordan uppers onto an Air Force 1 sole. Normally, it’s just a case of combining an upper and sole to produce a new shoe but on this Timeless Dunk, it’s completely different.

For this iteration, Nike has used the Dunk’s signature leather panelling to shroud the Vomero’s upper. The entire Vomero’s tooling acts as an underlay, with its sail palette contrasting the black leather that is sparingly sewn on. The tongue label and insole graphics reference the “Timeless” theme, suggesting how the Vomero is the modern-day equivalent of the Dunk. Both shoes were in fact built with a different purpose in mind, be that basketball or running, yet they have landed firmly on their feet as streetwear staples. The timeless theme could also be Nike recognising how both silhouettes are not bound to a certain period or fashion trend. Maybe it’s just the design team at the Swoosh simply experimenting on the Vomero 5 , a shoe that has been exposed to unconventional make-ups like A COLD WALL’s edition from 2018.
