Grace Wales Bonner has earned her crown as the queen of designing exceptional sneakers. The problem? Her creations are so coveted they sell out in a flash. That’s where collections like the upcoming adidas Samba OG ‘Pony Hair’ come into play.
This latest drop, revealed in two striking colourways: ‘Wonder White’ and ‘Maroon’, offers a fresh twist on the classic Samba OG. Ditching the typical leather construction, this iteration is wrapped entirely in pony hair, from the toebox to the heel. Both versions feature suede striping on the lateral and medial sides, while the midsoles take a unique approach: the ‘Wonder White’ boasts a bold black midsole, while the ‘Maroon’ sticks to the timeless gum rubber sole that’s been a hallmark of the Samba since the late 1940s.
If you combined both pairs in a sneaker blender, you’d likely end up with something akin to the Wales Bonner x adidas Samba Pony Tonal Cream White from 2023. The resemblance is uncanny, right down to the intricate stitched details inspired by traditional craftsmanship.
That said, there are a few key differences. Unlike Wales Bonner’s version, the ‘Pony Hair’ collection skips the gold rimmed eyelets and opts for a more streamlined silhouette by dropping the elongated tongue. The result? A design that feels both versatile and wearable for everyday style.
The adidas Samba OG ‘Pony Hair’ collection is available now through adidas and select retailers worldwide, priced at £100 per pair. Considering the resale value of the Wales Bonner collab can hit up to £900, this collection offers serious bang for your buck and is quick to sell out when it restocks.
