When adidas’ 4D tech first hit the sneaker scene back in 2017, it was like nothing we’d ever seen before. The 3D-printed sole unit was created in partnership with Californian-based company Carbon, and uses an extremely technical process to create the lattice sole structure you’ve come to associate with the shoe. Now, the adidas Ultra 4DFWD is set to take the model a step further into the future, so here’s what’s new.
The next-generation version features an all-new midsole unit, which is made of 40% bio-based material and is specially coded to compress forward on vertical impact, which will definitely put a spring in your step. Put through its paces during testing at the University of Calgary, it was found that compared to previous generations, the 4DFWD sole unit generates three times as much forward motion and even reduces braking forces, making it one of the techiest runners on the market today.
Atop its eye-catching sole unit, the adidas Ultra 4DFWD features an Ultra Boost-like upper that comes constructed from a mix of Parley Ocean Plastic and recycled polyester. The Primeknit structure hugs the foot for a secure fit, providing the wearer with extra support and a free range of movement. A Continental Rubber outsole then provides the perfect finishing touch, delivering the perfect amount of traction to tackle slick wintery streets.
