The Best adidas Vegan Trainers

We're now living in a period where environmental impacts have become a serious issue that needs all the attention that it must have. And to be straightforward, the footwear industry we so love undeniably contributes to some of the harmful effects to our planet, with many of us not considering our carbon footprints when purchasing high-heat sneakers every week. Not only that, but the leather industry is also involved in the process of killing animals to be used for the leather trade year after year.

With that being said, as more problems begin to arise, more and more of us have become more conscious of what materials are involved in the products we buy and the sales of vegan trainers have been steadily increasing. So without compromising style and keeping all the ethical issues in mind, world-renowned sportswear label adidas has leapt towards a more sustainable future by completely revamping some of its legendary, much-loved silhouettes with eco-friendly and cruelty-free materials.

Although not a 'vegan brand' adidas does offer a wide-variety of vegan trainers and clothing. adidas are no strangers to facing issues such as sustainability and ethical production head-on and have taken the same approach to producing vegan products. After a successful collaboration with Stella McCartney on a range of vegan sneaker, the three stripe brand broadened their horizons and began to manufacture vegan iterations of some of their most popular silhouettes.

A variety of materials are used to replace animal products used throughout adidas trainers. For the uppers, leather is replaced with mushroom leather, made in partnership with the company Bolt Threads. The glue used throughout adidas' range of vegan sneakers is also vegan, as the brand uses synthetic rather than natural glue.

Whether or not you consider yourself as part of the Three Stripes family, or you prefer other sporting goods such as PUMA or Reebok, we know for a fact that you cannot overlook some of these adidas Originals shoes as they have been around for decades. And since they're now more present in the modern age, adidas have developed earth-friendly technologies alongside their adidas Vegan range, such as: Primeblue which uses Parley Ocean Plastic, and Primegreen which focuses on recycled plastic waste.

Since 1969, the adidas Superstar model remained a relevant footwear style to the masses, and it's only right that adidas' best on-court sneakers receive a sustainable update through the use of vegan materials and recycled components. Though the silhouette looks exactly the same as the original design, we can guarantee that all the colours, panels, and outsole used on this pair are animal cruelty-free and recycled rubber. All together, still showing off the model's timeless appeal and colourways that we know and love.

Debuted in 1985 as a pair of tennis performance shoes, the adidas Stan Smith made its way to the rotation of every sneakerhead in the modern age, all thanks to its minimalistic, fashion-ready look. The vegan version of the Stan Smith arrives with a faux leather upper and an outsole engineered from rubber waste whilst still maintaining its iconic streamlined aesthetic. All former iterations of the model that are not part of the brand's sustainable ethos have now been discontinued which is a huge step from adidas towards making more of their sneakers vegan-friendly.

The German sportswear powerhouse introduced the NMD silhouette back in 2015. Inspired by the adidas Micro Pacer, the Rising Star and the Boston Super, the adidas NMD_R1 features a Primeknit-woven upper paired with a full-length Boost-cushioned sole underfoot and the ‘80s-inspired midsole plugs. The model evolved into various forms throughout the years, where we saw streetwear-famous iterations like the City Sock, Pharrell Williams’ Hu NMD, plus more. However, the latest delivery in 2022 offers the adidas NMD_R1 Primeblue, which is constructed from recycled ocean plastic made in part with Parley Ocean Plastic.

There's no questioning that the adidas Continental 80 is one of the best lifestyle kicks in the game. Like all the aforementioned pairs, these vegan sneakers maintain the retro design and original construction but are now made with a synthetic upper to promote a much more sustainable footwear option without discarding the model's adidas' classic branding details such as the logo window by the eyestays, sidewall stripes, and Trefoil-branded tongues.

The Bryony is one of the latest additions to adidas’ sustainable collection. Inspired by ‘80s basketball shoes, the adidas Bryony is a women’s-focused shoe made entirely from Primegreen which is a type of material made from recycled content and not virgin polyester. Pair it with a pair of leggings or joggers, these adidas shoes guarantee comfort and style at their best.
