First unveiled during the 2012 NBA All Star Weekend, alongside classics like the KD 4, LeBron 9, and Zoom Rookie; the Nike Air Foamposite One "Galaxy" quickly became a cultural phenomenon, captivating sneaker enthusiasts with its unique, cosmic design. Now, Nike Sportswear is set to reignite the hype, as the legendary "Galaxy" Foamposites make their highly anticipated return very soon.
When the Air Foamposite dropped in 1997, it screamed for attention. It was so unconventional, traditional sneaker construction methods threw in the towel. Sure, the design wasn’t everyone’s favourite, but you’ve got to respect the audacity.
The Foamposite’s secret weapon? Foam like none other! This stuff kept its shape, unlike those floppy sneakers that warp over time. The upper hugged foot bones like it was sculpted by a podiatrist turned artist and the carbon fibre plate made these look like shoes from the future.
While technologically, the Air Foamposite felt like it time traveled from the future, but convincing customers of its genius? A harder sell. Most people had no idea they were looking at a manufacturing marvel, and Nike’s marketing efforts didn’t exactly connect the dots; especially when considering these were more expensive than Air Jordans, which were the gold standard of cool.
But Nike had one trick up its sleeve: star power. Enter Penny Hardaway, Orlando Magic’s go to point guard and all around legend. And just like that, the Foamposite carved out its place in basketball (and sneaker) history.
By 2012, all the stars aligned (literally). The NBA All Star Game was happening in Orlando, Penny’s old turf, right next to the Kennedy Space Center. Space. Flight. Air. Basketball. You can almost hear the Nike designers shouting, “Eureka!” Enter the "Galaxies," a Foamposite colourway so wild, it looked like NASA had a hand in it. The upper was decked out in a galaxy print, the soles glowed in the dark, and there was even a "flight" tab on the laces, just in case you forgot these were inspired by, well, space. Nike was clearly shooting for the moon.
The Galaxies weren’t just another sneaker release; they were a cultural moment. Nostalgia, exclusivity, and glowing soles? That combo reignited the Foamposite flame, proving these kicks were finally ready to claim their place in sneaker history. And now they're coming back for a select few to get their hands on them.
Thanks to fresh imagery shared by @thesolechaserz, we now have a detailed look at the 2025 iteration. This updated release stays true to the original, featuring the signature all over galaxy print on the Foamposite shell, glowing outsoles, and black eyestays.
Key elements include a mini embroidered Swoosh on the toe, Penny Hardaway’s iconic 1 Cent logo on the tongue, heel, and outsole, as well as a carbon fibre midfoot shank for added performance. Fans will also be thrilled to see the return of the coveted "Remove Before Flight" tag.
Set to launch in February 2025, likely coinciding with the NBA All Star Weekend, the "Galaxy" Foamposites will retail for £210. They’ll be available via the Nike SNKRS app and select UK retailers, including Footpatrol and END.
As with the original drop, these sneakers are expected to be extremely limited, making them a must have chase for collectors and fans alike.
