When it comes to fashion partnerships, few are as longstanding (and as consistently successful) as the collaborative project between adidas and Yohji Yamamoto, whose Y-3 project dates back to 2003. Now, 20 years later, that’s still going strong, as the duo is set to drop the second instalment from their SS23 range very soon.
For this collaboration, the partnership continues to build on the idea of “Technical Effortlessness” - a phrase that perfectly encapsulates Yamamoto’s approach to fashion. Inspired by his fondness for utilitarian garments, this new chapter sees Y-3 recontextualise its signature archetypes and explore the relationship between design and function.
Working with avant-garde shapes and sensibility, the collection spans both clothing and footwear, offering new and interesting takes on both. Apparel arrives with adaptable details that include snap buttons, cords and asymmetric cuts, while footwear has been given a new lease of life, with boundary-pushing styles like the Itogo offering up multiple ways to be worn.
To put a practical spin on the styles, many of the items within the collection are designed with outdoor-ready detailing - a key feature here is the workwear-style cuts on the clothing, as well as the GORE-TEX-treated Y-3 TERREX SWIFT R3 GTX - the leading footwear style from the range. Peep a good look at the collection through the campaign imagery, shot by Shoichi Aoki and directed by Emily Okuda-Overhoff, and look for the collection to drop on the 7th of April at adidas.
Up next, here's how to get your hands on the upcoming adidas x Gucci collab.
