If we’ve learnt anything over the past 12 months, it's that no one should have ever underestimated New Balance. The Boston-based brand really led the pack with its releases last year, with silhouettes like its 550, 1906R and 990v6 providing a fresh change of pace from the somewhat stale sea of Dunks and Jordans that had dominated the sneaker scene over the past few years. However, after every breakout year, a brand’s audience will always find itself asking the same questions. “What’s next?” “Will they be able to keep this up?” In New Balance’s case, the answer to the latter is a resounding yes, and this version of its 610 model is one of the best sneakers we’ve seen in a while.
New Balance isn’t usually a brand that succumbs to internet trends - it’s built its reputation on doing completely the opposite, but there’s something a little Gorpcore-inspired about its newest focus. Based on the 2012 NB 610, a trail shoe, the new 610v1 version of the model has been given ‘Protection Pack’ creator Yue Wu’s magic touch, combining the best in tech with elevated design details to rival any ACG sneaker or Salomon Sportstyle creation.
Taking on the mid-00s aesthetic that seems to be so in vogue right now, the 610v1 comes crafted from a mixed-material construction of mesh, nubuck and leather, providing the wearer with the perfect balance between form and function. The combination of its rugged mesh base and premium-looking overlays reflect the sneakers’ versatility: it’ll look just as good out in town as it will on the trails, and its elevated outdoorsy aesthetic has already captured the attention of some of Instagram’s biggest mood board pages.
In terms of detailing, branded stitched-on badges at the ankle and tongue tab, exaggerated pull-tabs and exposed stitching at the forefoot give the pair an extra technical look and feel, while underfoot the tonal-coloured sole unit comes packed with C-CAP cushioning for a comfy ride. Round rope laces are then threaded through a hiking-inspired lacing system to ensure a secure fit, meaning that you’ll be fully supported, whatever you’re having to tackle throughout the day.
