This April Fool's Day, we're not going to pull a prank on you or tell you a joke, instead, we're going to head down memory lane and explore some of the sneaker game's craziest collaborations. With the industry forecasted to reach a value of $119.5 billion USD by 2026, it's sometimes important to remember the weird and wonderful pairs that got us here in the first place, and one of them is the Sex and the City x Nike Air Presto!
To kick off our all-new segment, this particular Air Presto is inspired by the hit HBO romantic comedy-drama that starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon. Newer sneakerheads might not remember this show, but it first aired back in 1998 at a time when there was no Netflix and no on-demand services. If you wanted to catch the next episode, you had to tune in at the exact date and time. There was no other way that you could rewatch it, so if you miss it, you're probably going to have to wait until the video cassette hits shelves first.
While not much is known about the Sex and the City Nike shoe, rumour has it that they were created in or around 2008 to coincide with the Sex and the City movie (yes, there was a film and it did strangely well bringing in $418.8 million USD at the box office). Taking on the classy yet sassy vibe that the franchise aimed to target, the Presto itself featured a relatively simple aesthetic.
With a stark black neoprene upper, a clean cream rubber caging system wraps around the midfoot for added support and structure. A Nike Swoosh is finely embroidered across the vamp, while a shimmering silver one hits the Air midsole underfoot for a bit of much-needed bling.
A reflective pull tab adorns the heel, and just underneath this is the pièce de résistance. Encased within a badge is the Sex and the City logo in a serif font. Seen here in a gaudy pink hue, it almost feels out of place here. This area is usually reserved for the "AIR" branding, but here it's proudly emblazoned with a graphic that has withstood over two decades.
In fact, from the TV show's debut in 1998 to the second movie in 2010 (yes, there was indeed a second film), this has remained unchanged since. It's still as gaudy and glorious as ever.
While the Sex and the City x Nike Air Presto may seem a little random at first, when you really think about it, it actually sort of works. Released at around the same year, both collaborators have clearly stood the test of time. While it's obvious that not as many people watch or even talk about SATC anymore, the exact same can be said about the Presto. With that said, both have built their very own cult followings since, with many diehard fans still speaking about them on the daily even twenty years later. What other TV shows or sneakers have achieved this amount of success?
So, there you have it! The very first shoe in our Crazy Collabs segment! Do you remember when these were first unveiled? What other pairs do you want us to talk about? Be sure to let us know, and keep it locked at The Sole Supplier for the latest and greatest sneaker news and releases!
