Last spring, Chitose Abe was named the first ever guest designer to take over Jean Paul Gaultier's iconic couture line. While the coronavirus pandemic has delayed this debut by almost a year, we're now getting our first look at the sacai x Jean Paul Gaultier x Nike VaporWaffle. An unexpected-yet-expected three-way collaboration between the two famed designed and the Beaverton brand, these are truly something else.
Arriving in an all-too-familiar black and white colour palette, JPG's take on the VaporWaffle takes things to new heights - both physically and figuratively. While the classic sacai x Nike elements can be found here including the dual Swooshes and the doubled stacked midsole, the construction has been fully reworked to include leather, nylon, and suede. This is all stitched together for a look that is very clearly inspired by the Air Footscape Woven.
An extended ankle is haphazardly attached for a couture-influenced look, and the Nike collaboration is further cemented with co-branded tongues and a custom blue and white striped insole that has become synonymous to Gaultier.
As this is clearly a made-for-couture piece, there's a massive chance that the sacai x Jean Paul Gaultier x Nike VaporWaffle will never ever see the light of day. With that said, you never know, as it looks like the the fragment design x sacai x Nike LDWaffle could actually be releasing later this year could actually be releasing later this year! Let us know what you think of this three-way collab, and be sure to keep it locked at The Sole Supplier for additional information as it develops!
