It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when fleeces came into mainstream fashion, but we’re thankful they did. Once the go-to jacket of choice for mountaineers, geography teachers and crunchy mums (the ones that would send their kids to school with peanut butter sandwiches and cereal bars), the humble fleece is now a firm fixture amongst the fashion crowd.
There’s a chance we have the Gorpcore trend to thank for this resurgence, but to be honest, the appeal of the fleece extends far beyond techwear. If the fleece was meant to be restricted to the mountains, would Kim K have released a cosy SKIMS range? Would Hailey Bieber be rocking one on her post-pilates coffee run? We think not.
The fact is the nature of the fleece makes it every bit as fun now as it is functional. Sure, it has the practicality factor - fleece absorbs less water than wool and is quicker to dry, and it also helps to trap heat and keep you warm - but fleeces also just look better these days. Take these three fleece jackets from adidas for example, as we think they’re some of the most stylish winter warmers around right now.
