New Balance’s Protection Pack is easily one of its most sought-after ranges going. Having recently branched out from its original home on the 2002R and instead landed on the 1906, designer Yue Wu is back for another round on his original muse. Having landed in four new colourways, here’s an exclusive look at the "Black/Grey" and "Grey/Silver" options.
Officially dubbed the “Refined Future” pack, the family is instantly recognisable by its use of jagged suede and pre-distressed details, which were actually designed as a subtle reminder that shoes are meant to be worn. Over the years, the pack has been a favourite of sneakerheads and customisers everywhere: the layered design offers up endless options for both customisation and outfit building, the mark of a truly versatile shoe.
This time, the pairs don’t stray too far from previous colourways, instead offering riffs on variations that quickly became fan favourites. Here, there's a black and grey version, which serves to break up the stealthy colour palette of the earlier “Phantom”. Riffing on the famed “Rain Cloud” we get a grey and silver version, which sees less contrast across the upper.
As always, these arrive with the usual suede and mesh build, exposed tongues and New Balance branding hits, and come fitted with all the comfy tech you expect from the 2002R, with ABZORB and N-ergy cushioning underfoot.
