At one time, running shoes were for running! Yes, it was that practical and whilst fashion played a part, it was functionality that determined both the look and feel of the shoe. But as trends change, so to does the perception of what a great runner should offer. With shoes like the Ultra Boost and Flyknit Trainer, it became less about upping performance and more about making a statement.
Never before has the lines been so blurred between sports and lifestyle wear. That said, Nike's newest runner - the React Element 87 - manages to push those boundaries even further.
With a cutting edge construction not dissimilar to Virgil Abloh's deconstructed take on Nike icons, this pack is already creating a stir amongst sneakerheads.
Panels of clear synthetic are complimented by sections of rubberised material which are not only ultra lightweight but waterproof too.
Nike continues the futuristic vibe with a never-been-seen midsole that features unique pod like tentacles - we can only assume for added grip and stability.
Even with the impressive performance attributes, the Nike React Element 87 looks more like a high-fashion release, or at the very least, a NikeLAB limited-edition. But according to sources, this runner is a general release and will be arriving later this summer.
