When the Nike Air Max TL 2.5 first came out in 2006, it made its mark as a cult favourite. Two decades on, the retro fits into a different kind of footwear space, trading in its performance status and being adopted into Nike's lifestyle category.
That switch begs the question, how do you style Nike’s Air Max TL 2.5 today? We decided to figure that out ourselves, styling the TL 2.5 against three different outfits to test its range. With that said, let us show you how we’d fit this sneaker into our wardrobe.
Channelling the TL 2.5’s techy upper, we’ve gone down the Techwear route with this first outfit. Opting for a subtle take on this aesthetic, we haven’t committed to the full techwear ninja look, playing on the softer palette of this “Phantom” colourway. The natural tones from the FrizmWORKS cargos and thisisneverthat Down Vest are tastefully contrasted by the salmon pink about:blank mock neck jumper. Sandwiching that is the cream Air Max TL 2.5 and Sundays check beanie, which if you can tell, echoes the palette on the trainers. This isn’t our first rodeo, ladies and gentleman.
This next outfit is definitely in line with today’s streetwear trends. Barrel legs jeans from UNIQLO, and a MKI Bubble Jacket form an overarching silhouette, one that the Air Max TL 2.5 fits neatly into with its bulky midsole. Above, the pieces are mostly darker in colour thanks to addition of the Nike Fleece pullover and Topologie Bottle bag, allowing the shoes to stand out that much more. Of course, you can match the colourway more directly with your use of accessories, but sometimes, letting the shoe speak for itself is a wise option, especially when they’re as crispy as these.
Last but not least is the Preppy approach, a look that most would assume is outside of the Air Max TL 2.5’s wheelhouse. But take a look for yourself, and you’ll find that this ASOS DESIGN trench coat and chinos combo is perfectly suited next to the TL 2.5. We’ve dressed the look down with a fitted cap, open shirt and t-shirt blend, all of which complements the “Phantom” edition, making it feel right at home. An easy option for your day at the office, we’ve been surprised by just how much range the Air Max TL 2.5 has. Even your boss will give you the nod on this outfit, and if he doesn’t, that’s only because he couldn’t pull it off himself.
