Joe Freshgoods embraces a lived in, comfortable aesthetic for his latest work with New Balance. Moving away from high gloss finishes, the designer prepares two versions of the Abzorb 2010; dubbed “Hand-Me-Downs” and “Bag Lady”; that immediately command attention. They do this not through jarring colour, but by evoking the quiet comfort of vintage domesticity.
Look closely at the uppers: they carry the appearance of textiles lifted directly from old, patterned armchairs. Bouclé or chenille fabrics form the overlays on both trainers, lending a distinctly cosy, residential feel. The material edges possess a slightly unfinished texture, which reinforces the pre loved theme. The lighter iteration particularly commits to this idea; its midsole has a deliberate yellowing, suggesting it sat in an attic for decades awaiting rediscovery. Even the laces are fuzzy, continuing the soft, tactile theme right down to the eyelets.
The creative vision guiding this project truly sells the concept. The designer explained on Instagram that he wanted the release to represent his current journey; a journey he handles with care, stitches with love, and protects with cosy materials. This sentiment aligns perfectly with the minimal branding employed on the final product, allowing the rich textures and the overarching theme to speak loudest. This isn’t simply a shoe; the designer built it as a physical representation of his current perspective.
The Abzorb 2010 model itself provides a fascinating canvas for this worn in look. Although it only launched this year, making it one of New Balance’s newest silhouettes, its profile draws heavily from classic 99X series runners. The vintage appearance JFG applies contrasts sharply with the contemporary engineering in the sole unit. It features dual density Abzorb cushioning in the heel, along with SBS gel pods and a Stability Web in the mid foot. This dual nature; an overtly heritage appearance built on highly modern running technology; makes the Abzorb 2010 a surprisingly compelling platform.
Joe Freshgoods maintains an active partnership with the Boston brand, having recently delivered the popular 992 “Aged Well.” The 2010 model has also enjoyed early exposure, featuring in previous collaborations with Kith and Wtaps.
As of now, New Balance reveals no definite release information for the “Hand-Me-Downs” or “Bag Lady.” Given the designer's confirmed presence at ComplexCon, many are naturally speculating that event will serve as the launch venue for these unique trainers. Download The Sole Supplier app for more.
