It's no stretch to say that without the African-American community, the sneaker world as we know it would look very, very different. That’s why, every year since 2005, the Swoosh has paid tribute to the community with its Black History Month campaigns. Each year, Nike drops a special-edition celebratory capsule in line with the theme, with proceeds going to various charitable organisations.

This year, Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant has been picked to front the campaign, thanks to the basketball champ’s work with the Durant Family Foundation. The theme for the 2023 campaign highlights the importance of communal well-being by spotlighting five people from the Black community who have been vocal about prioritising wellness principles in order to push themselves and the community forward.
Speaking about his charity work in Nike’s new campaign, Durant says: “My well-being is about raising my consciousness, being present, and serving my community. I open myself up to being there for other people. That’s why the Durant Family Foundation exists.”
Olympic track and field athlete Anna Cockrell, Olympic fencer Darryl Homer, hockey player Saroya Tiker and rapper Watts Stix have also been tapped by the Swoosh to spread the message, which is focused on economic empowerment and fighting inequality both in and outside of sport.
Stay tuned for the special-edition capsule collection to drop, and in the meantime check out the trailer for the Micheal Jordan movie, "Air".
