Being the world's best player doesn’t mean you stop being a fan. Of course we’re talking about Kylian Mbappe, a player who features in most people’s top 5 list when it comes to footballing GOATs.
After a number of signature football boots, Mbappe is turning his eye towards the Air Max series for his latest collaboration with Nike. While his tunnel outfits usually consist of Air Jordans and high fashion footwear, his Instagram has recently revealed a move back to Air Max.
This makes sense given the news around the Nike Air Max Tn VII, a version of the Tn that the Swoosh has retro’d for the first time since it debuted in 2005. That’s twenty years in the vault, so you know Tn fanatics were waiting for this one.
Looking at the Kylian Mbappe Tn7, there are no nods to his team colours - the whites of Real Madrid and the blues of the French team are nowhere to be seen. So naturally, people are left asking what the inspiration is.
Given my sneaker based sleuth skills, the split coloured Air Max unit in the heel was the giveaway. A lime green and orange combo was a choice too direct to ignore, so of course my mind drifted back to iconic Nike footy boot colourways.
After a quick Google, it was obvious — the Nike Mercurial Vapor 1 from 2002 had clearly inspired the mood board on these Tns. Combining the “Dark Cinder” and “Chrome Lime” hues is genius, birthing this super tasteful KM Air edition of the Air Max Plus 7.
What with Nike retro-ing the two colourways under the "RGN" moniker in December of 2024 and March of 2025, it is no wonder that Mbappe wanted to highlight these two colourways once again.
As the Real Madrid star has since carried the torch for the Mercurial series, it is nice to know that he feels just as much of a connection to the originals as we do.
The cinder brown upper, muted gold (a feature from the Player Exclusive 2002 edition) on the midsole and orange Air unit, mixed in with silver and lime accents sprinkled on top. It’s subtle, but it’s clear once you see it.
This pair proves that just like the rest of us, Mbappe has never stopped being a fan of the beautiful game. Rumoured to be dropping in Spring of 2026, best set up an alert so we can let you know when these land.
