After Facebook recently announced it would be changing its name to Meta and is subsequently launching a metaverse, rumours have begun to circulate that Nike is planning to launch digital products. The brand has already filed trademarks for the use of its logos in digital form. While the Swoosh is always on top of trends, this could really set the brand apart from its competition, cementing Nike as an innovator in terms of digital tech.
Filing for digital trademarks of the Swoosh, Jumpman and several other logos, Nike has now registered them for use regarding “downloadable virtual goods, namely, computer programs featuring footwear, clothing, headwear, eyewear, bags, sports bags, backpacks, sports equipment, art, toys and accessories for use online and in online virtual worlds.”
As of yet, it's unclear what exactly Nike is planning, however it’s highly likely that NFTs could be in the works. Nike also recently listed two vacancies that point towards this theory, a Virtual Footwear Designer and Virtual Materials Designer. The job descriptions state that the brand is searching for an individual “to create and visualise innovative virtual material concepts using 3D tools.” It also states that “You will play a key role in redefining our digital landscape, ushering us into the metaverse, and growing our team’s capabilities,”
While plenty of this story is still developing, all of this news certainly points towards Nike’s entry into the metaverse.
