It’s back. One of the most iconic non-OG colourways in Jordan Brand history is making a comeback very soon, and we’ve finally got an official look.
The Air Jordan 1 “Shattered Backboard” is a modern classic which is finally set to return to shelves next month in all its glory. First released back in 2015, the “Shattered Backboard” colourway quickly found cult status, with limited stock numbers and high-quality materials solidifying it as a must-cop for sneakerheads at the time. Now, over a decade later, you have one more chance to get your hands on a pair.
While many of us will remember the boom and hysteria that surrounded almost every Jordan 1 release in 2020 following the success of The Last Dance, back in 2015 there was not the same level of hype behind the silhouette. In fact most non-OG releases never sold out and many even went into outlets. The “Shattered Backboards” however were not part of this group. Almost immediately after hitting stores they were sold out, making many sneakerheads want them even more. But why were they so popular?
Aside from the clean colourway - which offered a slight change to the classic AJ1 colourways we’d seen before - the Jordan 1 “Shattered Backboard” also boasted a premium tumbled leather upper. However, it was the story behind the shoe which really captured our hearts as well as our eyes.
The origin of the “Shattered Backboard” dates back to 1985, Michael Jordan’s first year in the NBA. After a breakout season, Jordan took part in an exhibition game in Italy between Stefanel Trieste and Juve Caserta. Jordan was supposed to play for both teams during this exhibition however found himself playing the entire game for Stefanel Trieste, sporting their iconic black and orange jersey for the whole game.
While this in itself might not seem to be enough to inspire a colourway, the events of that game definitely were. Not only did Michael Jordan put up 30 points, he also performed a dunk so powerful that it actually shattered the backboard. When the shoes he wore during this game went up for auction, there was even a shard of glass stuck in the sole of the shoe.
Taking inspiration from this incredible story, as well as the jersey worn by Jordan at the time, the AJ1 “Shattered Backboard” was born.
Now, Jordan Brand is paying homage to that iconic moment once again. Returning as close to the original as possible, right down to the unique insoles. If you want to own a piece of sneaker history, you’re not gonna want to miss out.
